Worcester Polytechnic Institute, more popularly known as simply WPI, is a private university located in Worcester, which is a city contained within Worcester County, situated in the US state of Massachusetts, with a population of over 172 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census, fact which makes New England's 8th largest city.
WPI was established in 1865 and it was one of the nation's first engineering and technology universities. Its 14 academic departments offer students over 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, in areas such as engineering, science, management, technology and arts, leading to master's, bachelor's and PhD degrees.
WPI's athletic teams are known as the Engineers and they compete in NCAA Division III, for 20 varsity sports teams. Their distinctive colors are crimson and gray, and their mascot is the Goat.
